Isshaq Ismail was born in 1989 in Accra, Ghana, where he lives and works. He is a versatile painter whose early works distil identity to bare traces — a metal mug, a white plastic fork, a red surface cutting through green silence. Without face or hands, his paintings convey the evidence of living, or surviving.
In his early piece 'Cup and Fork' (2017), Ismail asks what life places before us and what we make of it — do we accept, resist, mourn, or reimagine? It is a quiet meditation on dignity, disruption, and the logic of improvisation. The work is read as a subtle predecessor to Ismail's later, globally acclaimed impasto portraits.
Ismail is part of a new generation of Ghanaian painters whose work is increasingly visible in international collections and auctions.
