Accessibility

Our commitment

We want this website to be usable by as many people as possible, including people with disabilities. Our standard is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Where it applies, we follow the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz, BFSG).

Conformance status

This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 level AA. Some parts do not yet fully meet the standard. They are listed below.

What we have built in

  • A skip link to the main content on every page, one main heading per page and landmarks for header, navigation, main content and footer.
  • Every function works with the keyboard. Focus is always visible as a green outline.
  • The mobile menu keeps keyboard focus inside while it is open and closes with Escape.
  • Works open in a dialog with zoom. In the dialog, Tab moves between Zoom and Close, Escape closes it and focus returns to the work you opened.
  • The three theme panels open with the keyboard as well as with the mouse.
  • Text contrast meets level AA. No text is smaller than 12 pixels.
  • If your device asks for reduced motion, film loops do not start on their own and show a play button, the quote on the home page is shown in full straight away, and the effects on the exhibition pages stay still.
  • The film loops are muted and have no sound track. They are hidden from screen readers, and the text around each loop describes what it shows.
  • Documentaries load from YouTube only after you click play. The play button names the film.
  • Images of works have a text alternative with title and artist.
  • The layout works from small phones to large screens without horizontal scrolling.

Known limitations

  • Without the reduced motion setting, film loops play while they are in view and do not yet have their own pause button.
  • Descriptions of the works are limited to title, artist, year, size and material.
  • Captions and transcripts for the documentaries depend on YouTube’s player.
